This U.S. Springfield rifle has an "NJ" marked butt plate with a "JSA/1903" cartouche on the left side of the stock just above the trigger and a fine circle "P" on the underside of the straight grip wrist.  The front sight is a pinned blade and the rear sight is fully adjustable and folding graduated to 20.  The bore has shine and shows some dirt.  The walnut stock and hand guard shows assorted scattered light handling with the top of the butt stock just forward of the butt plate showing an area approximately 2 1/4" long x 1 1/4" wide that appears to have been lightly ground.  The trap door in the butt plate contains a cylindrical vessel with a screw on lid where is fitted a pin for cleaning and oiling.  The metal surfaces show thinning to the finish with only a small amount of light handling present.
